Book Design: Making textbooks better
Textbooks are notoriously badly designed. They are filled with superfluous pictures,
cramped text and appalling cross
referencing, none more so than Chemistry
textbooks. This became the subject of my
dissertation at Central St Martins, how to
redesign textbooks to make them more
appealing by increasing legibility, clarity
and layout.
The most important observations I made were ring-binding the book so it lay flat,
having cut tabs on each chapter to help
find the place and having a lot of white
space to make the page less cluttered.
